Vijender Singh – Olympics Medal Winner

Born in the Indian state of Haryana, on the 29th of October, 1985, Vijender Kumar Singh is a renowned Indian boxer, who has a list of awards and honors to his credit, including a bronze medal the the 2008 Olympic Games that was held at Beijing.

Hailing from a poor background where his father is a bus driver who drove buses overtime in order to afford the education of his two sons: Manoj and Vijender, Singh grew passionate about boxing seeing his elder brother Manoj practice the sport.

Manoj managed to get himself selected in the Indian army, and supported his brother financially to help him pursue boxing. Soon Vijender made up his mind to turn his passion into a career.

He started his training at the Bhiwani Boxing Club, and soon went on to win a number of state level titles. And ever since then there was no looking back for the young talent, who managed to win a bronze medal at the 2006 Commonwealth Games as well as at the 2006 Asian Games.

He has been honored with the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, and was also ranked as the top boxer in 2009 by the International Boxing Association for the middleweight category, with 2800 points.
