Located on the banks of Tunga River in the south Indian state of Karnataka, the Sringeri Sharada Peetham is the southern Advaita Vedanta Matha, in other words, a popular monastery established by the famous Indian philosopher and theologian Adi Shankara in an era as ancient as the 8th century AD.

The holy place serves as the fundamental center of the Smarta section, established by the great teacher Adi shankara himself.

After the founder went on his expedition to find the remaining of the three peethams—in Dwarka, Puri and Badrinath, respectively, Sureshwaracharya became the successor of Shankaracharya in the Sringeri Sharada Peetham.

As of 23rd January, 2015, Shri Bharathi Theertha Maha Swamigal has appointed Vidhushekara Bharathi Swamji as the present uttaradhikari of the Sringeri Sharada Peetham.
