Saputara – Popular Hill Station

Located in the Dang district of the Indian state of Gujarat, Saputara is a popular hill station having a height with an elevation of around 1,000 meters. According to the census of 2001 in India, Saputara has an extremely tiny population with a total of only around 6,301 people. The official language of this hill station is the same as the official language of the state of Gujarat: Gujarati.

Literally, the term Saputara means abode of the serpents. On the banks of the river Sarpagana here, the adivasi people worship an image of snake on the popular Hindu festival of Holi.

Geographically, the Saputara Hills are located in the Dang forest area of the Western Ghats on a plateau. The border of the Maharashtra state is only 4 KM away from the hill station, and as on today, the place is well-planned and developed fully as a hill station resort consisting of all the modern amenities such as hotels, boat clubs, swimming pools, ropeways, and a museum as well. There are a plethora of places that the tourists can visit for sight-seeing in and around Saputara. These are:

  • Artist Village, popular for a list of artefacts.
  • Purna Wildlife Sanctuary, which is situated at a distance of 60 KMs from Dangs, in Mahal.
  • Vansda National Park
  • Sunrise Point, which gives the perfect view of both Saputara as well as the neighboring Malegaon.
  • Sunset Point—this one gives a wonderful view of the Dang forest.
  • Saputara Lake Boating.
  • Gira Falls—a popular excursion point..
  • The ropeway, which gives visitors a 10 minutes ride from the valley to the Sunset point.
  • A list of gardens—that includes Rose Gardens, Lake Gardens, and the Step gardens.

The hill station is located very close to the cities of Mumbai and Surat. Surat lies 172 KM away from Saputara, while Mumbai lies 250 KM away.
