Born on the 20th of August in the year 1944, Rajiv Gandhi was the son of Indira Gandhi, and the grandson of India’s first prime ministerJawaharlal Nehru. The seventh prime minister of independent India, Gandhi was the youngest prime minister ever to come into power, and even until today, his assassination at a young age remains India’s much talked about political controversies.

He started off his career as a pilot and after pursuing his academics from Britain; he returned to India and became a part of the Indian Airlines, which was a state owned venture. He married Sonia Gandhi in 1968, and had two children with her—Priyanka and Rahul. He never had a keen interest in politics, but after his older brother Sanjay Gandhi passed away in a plane crash, he joined politics on his mother’s insistence.

Things took a different turn when the then president of India and his mother Indira Gandhi was assassinated in 1984 by her own Sikh bodyguards, and this led to Rajiv Gandhi taking over the office as the prime minister at a very young age.

His win in the Lok Sabha elections, cited to a large number of sympathy votes led his party to win majority of the seats. He was assassinated on the 21st of May in the year 1991, at the age of 46, and was honored with the Bharat Ratna Award posthumously in the same year.
