Born on the 19th of December, 1934, Pratibha Patil is a renowned Indian politician who became the 12th president of independent India in the year 2007, and served for a period of five years, until 2012. She made a record for herself by being the first woman president to be ever elected in the country of India.

An active member of the Indian National Congress, she was elected as the president after she defeated her opponent Bhairon Singh Shekhawat. Born and raised in the state of Maharashtra, she received her education in political science and economics and went on to pursue a career in law.

She initiated her political journey by becoming a member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly in the year 1962 and later went on to become a member of the Rajya Sabha in the year 1985. Unlike other presidents, Pratibha Patil’s political career has been described by others as something that has been undoubtedly low profile, with the least of ado.

Her tenure witnessed repeated controversies and a lot of media attention, wherein she changed death penalty punishments of around 35 convicts into life time imprisonment, despite the fact that these people were convicted of mass murder and heinous crimes like rape, murder of children, etc.

She was also accused of making extreme expenses on foreign trips.
