Nashik – Popular Pilgrim Town for Hindus
Located on the western edges of the Deccan Plateau in the Indian state of Maharashtra, Nashik is a popular pilgrim town that also happens to be the third largest city in the entire state of Maharashtra. Geographically, it is surrounded by the picturesque beauty of the Western Ghats and mainly lies on the banks of the popular holy River Godavari.
Out of the many religious aspects that the city of Nashik is famous for, one and the most vital one is the fact that it is one of the four host cities of the most popular pilgrimage of the world—the Kumbh Mela; the other three cities being Haridwar, Allahabad, and Ujjain.
Other than that, the city has a wide variety of temples to offer to all the Hindu devotees who take keen interest in worshipping their deities and also finding a link to their spiritual self. The main points of pilgrim interest in Nashik include, Panchavati—this is the ground where the auspicious festival fair of Kumbh Mela takes place, with the largest peaceful gathering of the world. The word Panchavati literally means “a garden of five banyan trees,” and historically finds its reference in the great indian epic, The Ramayana, in which Panchavati is mentioned as the place where Lord Rama had built a home to stay in the forest during his exile with wife Sita, and brother Lakshman.
Then comes Ramkund, another popular pilgrim spot that houses a holy tank. It is considered to be the same tank where Lord Rama would take his daily baths and devotees believe that if a believer takes a dip into the tank, his wishes would come true.
Next is the popular Trimbakeshwar Temple that happens to be one of the 12 jyotirlingams in the country. It is believed that the shivalinga here is so holy and auspicious that one would attain salvation after his visit to this holy shrine.
Other prominent pilgrim spots in the city include the famous Ramkund, the Kalaram Temple, the Kapaleshwar Temple, the Someshwar Temple, the Muktidham Temple, as well as the Sundarnarayan Temple. The place also has a popular Coin Museum that attracts lot of tourist attention.
