He started his career by becoming a part of a drama club along with his elder brother, in order to support his not-so financially secured family. It was during this time that Mahatma Gandhi’s principles and philosophies to lead India towards its independence struck a chord with his heart and led him to join the Indian National Congress Party.

His film career saw a soaring graph, with him laddering up from supporting roles to lead roles and the scenario remained the same for about three decades in a row. His popularity as a film actor helped him garner a lot of public attention and support, and he soon became a member of the DMK party. Later in the year 1972, he left the DMK party and formed his own party called the Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (ADMK).

He was sworn in as the chief minister of Tamil Nadu in 1977 and he remained so until his death in the year 1987.

He was honored with the Bharat Ratna Award in the year 1988 posthumously.
