Indira Gandhi – Bharat Ratna Adward Winner
Born on the 19th of November, in the year 1917, Indira Gandhi was the daughter of India’s first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru, who made a sigprime minister of the nation.
The only child of Nehru, in the year 1959, she was elected as the president of the Congress Party. After Nehru passed away, she voluntarily declined the proposal of fighting the leadership elections and took the decision to become one of the cabinet ministers. Thus, Lal Bahadur Shastri took over as the second prime minister of India after Nehru’s demise.
When Shastri passed away, it was Indira Gandhi who defeated her rival Morarji Desai and won the leadership, succeeding Shastri as the new prime minister of India, after Charan Singh’s brief tenure with the post.
She was awarded with the Bharat Ratna Award by the government of India in the year 1971, and till date, her assassination remains one of the most controversial topics in Indian history, as she was murdered by her own Sikh bodyguards who were on a rampage after she ordered for the demolition of the Sikh Holy Temple located in Amritsar.
She passed away on the 31st of October, 1984.
