Giani Zail Singh Biography
Born on the 5th of May in the year 1916, Giani Zail Singh, also known as Zail Singh, was the seventh president of India, who took over the office after Neelam Sanjiva Reddy.
A renowned politician before taking over the country’s presidency, Singh was a member of the Indian National Congress Party and played a significant role in Indian politics, by playing the role of a list of ministerial positions, such as the Home Minister, as well as various other posts in the Union Cabinet.
He was honored with the title of “Gyani” or “Giani” before his name, as he was an extremely learned man, who also had a lot of educational achievements.
In 1972, he became the Congress Chief Minister for the state of Punjab and led to a lot of developments in the state by holding public events and functions, conducting social, religious gatherings and also developing the state’s infrastructure.
He was unanimously elected as the president of India in 1982 and he served as the president for a period of five years, until the year 1987. His tenure saw a lot of significant events in history, such as Indira Gandhi’s assassination and the anti-Sikh riots of 1984.
He passed away on the 25th of December, 1994, at the age of 78.
