Atal Bihari Vajpayee Biography – A Great PM, Statesman, Poet & Gentlemen
Mr. Atal Bihari Vajpayee was one of the greatest orators of India, a poet, an activist during the Quit India Movement, a great Stateman and a great Prime Minister. He was the founding president of Bharatiya Janata Party.Mr. Atal Bihari Vajpayee had an impeccable personality, his aura was enough to brighten up any occasion.
He was the Member of Parliament for almost more than four decades as he was elected in the lower house or the Lok Sabha for ten times and twice in the Upper house or the Rajya Sabha. The great man served as an active Member of Parliament for Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh till the year 2009. He was elected as the Prime Minister of India three times. His first tenure was for a nominal term of 13 days in the year 1996, second from 1998 to 1999for a term period of only eleven months, and eventually in 1999 to 2004 for a full term of five years.
Birth and education
Mr. Atal Bihari Vajpayee was born on 25th December 1924 under the shed of Krishna Devi and Krishna Bihari Vajpayee in the city of Gwalior.PanditShyam Lal Vajpayee was his grandfather who had migrated from their ancestral village namedBateshwar in Uttar Pradesh to Morena in Gwalior. His father was a school teacher.
Mr. Atal Vihari Vajpayee completed his schooling from the SaraswatiShishuMandir located in Gorkhi, Bara in Gwalior. Vajpayee completed his graduation with distinction in Hindi, Sanskrit, and English from Gwalior’s Victoria College now known as Laxmi Bai College. He thereafter completed his post-graduation from DAV College, Kanpur, in Political Science and was awarded a first-class degree. He left the study of law due to partition riots.
Early Political Career
Mr. Atal Bihari Vajpayee started activism with Arya Kumar Sabha that was a youth wing of Arya Samaj of Gwalior. Eventually, in the year 1944, he became the general secretary of the Sabha. In the year 1939, has a swayam sevak joined the RashtriyaSwayamsevakSangh (RSS). During the years 1940–44 the RSS offered the Officers Training Camp that was attended by him and he gradually became a “full-time worker” of the RSS in the year 1947.
Mr.Vajpayee’s very first exposure to the Indian politics was in the year 1942 when his elder brother was arrested during the Quit India Movement for 23 days. In 1948 RSS was banned since it was alleged for playing a role in the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. In the year 1951, Vajpayee with DeendayalUpadhyayaformed the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, which was a Hindu right-wing political party that was associated with RSS.
In the year 1977, Atal Bihari Vajpayee in the cabinet of Prime Minister Morarji Desai became the Minister of External Affairs. Being a foreign minister, in that year Vajpayee was the first person who delivered a speech in Hindi to the United Nations General Assembly. Gradually Vajpayee had established himself as a dignified political leader and an experienced and well-known statesman. Thereafter he fought for a very long time and was one of the strongest critics of the Congress. He along with some of his colleagues like L.K Advani, Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, formed the Bharatiya Janata Party known as the BJP in the year 1980. He became the first president of the BJP.
The BJP slowly grew in strength in the year 1995. During the general elections of 1966, the BJP emerged as the largest party in the Lok Sabha and was invited by the president to form a government. Vajpayee became the Prime Minister for 13days. Thereafter in 1996-1998, he was again elected as the Prime Minister and finally in the years 1999-2004 he remained as the Prime Minister of India.
During his tenure as a Prime minister, Vajpayee worked diligently and proved to be a worthy candidate of the chair. He was awarded Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award of India in the year 2015 by the then President. He was a man of wisdom and a leader of the nation.
In 2009, Vajpayee suffered a stroke, later he deteriorated and was in a wheelchair, suffered from dementia and chronic diabetes. On 11 June 2018, Vajpayee got admitted to AIIMS, where he did not improved and died on 16 August due to age-related issues.
