History of Purana Qila

Built in 1534 AD by Mughal Emperor and son of Babur, Humayun, the Purana Qila is a beautiful castle situated in Delhi. Apart from the beautiful and varied Mughal architecture and craftsmanship, the fascinating aspect of the monument that garners attention from the globe is the famous lights and sounds show that is conducted at this place in the evenings, everyday.

From Islam, Hinduism to Sikhism, Buddhism and Jainism, people from all religions, faiths and beliefs visit the place to be a witness of the beautiful show.

The quila is in rectangular shape and has a 2 kms long circuit, with three big gateways on each side of the structure.

Coming to the directions in the monument, the quila had water from river Yamuna flowing from the eastern direction of the fort, while towards the north, there’s the Talaqui darwana, which means a forbidden gateway. This passage combines the quintessential Islamic arches with Hindu arts and right at the direction of the southern gateway, there’s the Humayun darwana, having similar plans of combinations.

The place has nine pools of water, which light up during the dusk giving a spectacular sight of the castle. It is open for tourist visits every day.
