Jawaharlal Nehru – Bharat Ratna Adward Winner

Born on the 14th of November, in the year 1889, Jawaharlal Nehru was a renowned figure in the nationalistic movements to fight against the British for India’s independence, who was also the first prime minister of independent India. He achieved the title of “Pandit” before his name, for his scholastic achievements in life, and was also seen as a significant entity who went on to give shape to Indian politics, its administration as well as republic.

An intellect from childhood, he went on to become a lawyer, after graduating from Trinity College in Cambridge. He had keen interest in politics from a very young age and went on to become a headstrong, prominent leader of the Indian National Congress who vouched for a secular nation and demanded for complete independence of the country from the clutches of the British.

During his tenure, Congress became the most dominating party, ruling over both state and national level politics. It was under his leadership and administration that the Constitution of India came into force in the year 1950, which led to a number of social, economic and political reforms in the country.

He was awarded with the Bharat Ratna in the year 1955, and his birthday is fondly celebrated as Children’s Day in India. He passed away on 27th May, 1964.
