J.R.D. Tata – Bharat Ratna Award Winner

Born on the 29th of July, in the year 1904, Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata, commonly known just as J.R.D. Tata, was a popular Indian business tycoon who was born in France, and served as the chairperson of the Tata Sons. He made a record for himself by becoming the first licensed pilot of India, in the year 1929, way before it attained independence.

An intellectual since childhood, he pursued his academics from a variety of countries like India, Japan, France and London. He began his career initially by being a part of the French Army and although he wished to pursue engineering as a career from the University of Cambridge, his father asked him to return to India and that is when he joined the Tata Sons.

In the year 1929, he received Indian citizenship, after renouncing his French citizenship. A renowned entity from the very beginning of his business career, he was regarded as the father of Indian civil aviation after he achieved the first license as a pilot in India.

The French government honored him with the French Legion of Honor Award in the year 1983, and he was honored with the Bharat Ratna Award by the Indian government in the year 1992.

He passed away on the 29th of November, in the year 1993.
