In history, he is most popularly known for his leadership in the Rampa Rebellion that took place between the years 1922 to 1924, wherein a large group of tribal leaders and other supporters fought against the British rulers as a move to fight for independence. The rebellion was mainly a response to the Forest Act passed by the British government which barred the tribal people from free movement in the forests and also from pursuing their traditional agricultural practices.

Raju was a man of power and strength and fought till his last breath in the forests, fighting for the rights of the tribal people, with bows and arrows. Raju and his troops managed to kill a number of British officials, but as fate had it, he was eventually trapped, tied to a tree in the forest and shot dead. He breathed his last on the 7th of May in the year 1924.
